Buddhist Relics
Pomunsa Temple
This temple sits high up in the mountains on the island of
Songmodo off the western coast of Kanghwado. The compound
is relatively small but there is some superb and very ornate
painting on the waves of the various buildings and especially
those of the bell pavilion.
One of the most interesting sights here is the 10m high
rock carving of Kwansum Posal, the Goddess of Mercy, which
stands below a granite overhang high above the temple compound.
Chongsusa Temple
Chongsusa,
located in the east Marisan of Kanghwa, is the temple of the
Korean Buddhist Chogye Order.
The temple is said to be constructed by Hoejongsonsa in the
8th year of King Sondok of Shilla Kingdom(639). When Hoejongsonsa
of Nakkasan visited Ch'amsongdan in Marisan(Manisan), he said
that it was the place where a Buddhist could perceive the
truth, seeing the open view of this place. He then built this
temple and named it Chongsusa.
