Park
Pyonsanbando National Park
This
park is located in the North of Jeonlla province along the
Western coastline. The mountains of Pyonsan rise directly
above the sea, steeply sloped with deep valleys. Nakjodae
and Bongraegugok guarantees you an unforgettable experience.
Places of interest include several beach resorts, time-honored
Buddhist temples, waterfalls, and ancient mountain fortresses.
Maisan Provincial Park
Maisan
means 'horse ears mountain', a rough description of the shape
of the two rocky outcrops which make up the twin peaks.
The east peak(sutmaisan) is considered male and reaches a
height of 678m. The west peak(Ammaisan) is regarded as female
and is slightly taller at 685m. T'apsa (Pagoda Temple) is
stuck right between the two 'horse ears'. It's a temple of
unique design, decorated by hundreds of stone formations created
by stacking rocks on top of one another.
Moaksan
The
provincial park, sitting east of Kimje fields, is a popular
spot for hiking as it is near Chonju. Rising over the Honam
Plains, it offers a panoramic view from the top.
The park is especially popular for its marked changes from
season to season. Kumsansa temple stands high at the entrance
of the Mt. Moak Provincial park. It was built in 599, and
reconstructed in 776 by monks during the Shilla Kingdom. With
Mirukchon Hall (National Treasure No.62) and some ten other
important cultural properties, it is regarded as the foremost
temple of the region.
Mirukchon possesses the only three-story Buddhist worship
hall in Korea, which is rare for Korean temples. In the spring,
the temple is crowded with tourists coming to see a panorama
of cherry blossoms spread from the entrance to the temple.
Even in winter, one can see Buddhists bowing in front of the
image of Maitreyabodhisattva enshrined in Mirukchon Hall.
Kangch'on Mountain
Kangch'on mountain, which divides Jeonllabuk-do and Jeonllanam-do,
cuts a brilliant figure with the beauty of its deep valleys,
incessantly flowing streams, and fantastic crags and cliffs.
There are a large number of rock peaks and famous spots such
as the Piryong Waterfall and Kumgangmun in the vicinity of
the valleys. In addition, Kumsong sansong, the mountain fortress
wall, has maintained its original features which are a cause
for admiration. Tamyangho Lake, west of the mountain, is also
worth a visit.
