Historical Attraction
Hwanbyoktang
The
pavilion is an attic-style house built high off the ground
so that one may look all around.
The pavilion has only a floor without walls to be a people-centered
resting place with nature as a background. Mangyangjong and
Chongsokchong of the Kwandong district, which look out over
the sea and lie with large mountains in back, are especially
famous Korean pavilions. They are named for the pen names
of Song sun and Chong Chol, famous poets in Chosun Dynasty,
respectively.
The pavilion contributed to the development of Korean literature
because it is the place where Shiga (a genre of literature
native to Korea) such as Kasa (the words of songs) and Shijo
(traditional Korean verses) as well as Chinese poems were
written.
P'ilamsowon
Korean
sowons started to be established in 1572 and their structures
have varied according to their changing fuctions. At first,
education was weighed more importantly, but from the later
years of the 17th century, the balance shifted to the religious
services.
In the 19th century the structure became simpler, composed
only of a shrine and a lecture hall. P'ilamsowon shows the
typical style for it had been established in the days when
the educational and religious functions were equally balanced
in importance. Books and old documents of P'ilam sowon are
registered as the National Treasure.
These were published in the 18th and 19th centuries. Important
booklets are 'Nobibo', records on slaves, 'Wonjang-sonsaeng-an',
records of the names of the officers of this sowon, 'P'ilam
sowon-jipgang-an' records on lectures, 'Mungye-an' record
of names of who attended the lectures, 'P'ilam sowon-sojae-yuan'
record of students,'Pilam sowon-wonjok' record of assets.
These are important historical materials to study the Confucian
educational system, social & economic history of that time,
and of course, the history of this sowon.
Yun Son-do Relics at Pogildo
Yun
Son-do came to Pogil-do in the 15th year of King Yongjo, and
built a house to write his famous works for 13 years. He named
the various rocks around the house, enjoyed the natural surroundings
and built a library. He built a study and reconstructed 'Seyun-jong'pond."Seyun"
means the uplifting of spirit due to the neat surroundings.
The existing mountain stream was blocked by rocks to create
this pond, Seyun-ji, as well as the artificial pond, Hoisudam.
The summerhouse on the artificial islet between the two ponds
commands a fine view of the surroundings.
