Telecommunications
Korea
is connected to all appropriate international
telephone, telex and satellite communications
systems, providing trouble-free connections to
virtually anywhere in the world. Most hotels provide
guest room International Direct Dial (IDD) services;
telex and fax services are usually available at
hotel business centers. Outside hotels, long-distance
calls can be made from IDD payphones or cardphones
in various locations. The push-button call-home
system, which gives immediate connection with
the operator of the country required, is also
available. Local calls from public telephones
cost 50 Won per three minutes; emergency calls
are free on 119, as are directory enquiries on
114.
Charges are based on regional area and distance.
To make an international call,
push
the button 001/002/008 (Access Code) + Country
Code + Area Code + Number.
Postal Services
Korea's
internal and international postal services are
excellent. Post Offices are open from 9am to 6am
on Monday to Friday and from 9 am to noon on Saturday.
Public mail boxes are always cilored red. Domestic
mail can be delivered in about two days. Postfax,
Speedpost, and poste restante services are available.
Further, there are local post offices throughout
nationwide; all are closed on Sundays and public
holidays.
Most hotels offer postal
facilities for guests' letters and packages, and
a packing service. Many shops and department stores
will handle packing and shipping of customers'
purchases. As postal insurance usually only covers
total loss, it is advisable to buy an all-risks
insurance policy for major purchases, particularly
for fragile items, to cover the possibility of
damage as well as loss in transit.
Electricity
The voltage is 220 volts,
60 cycle. Always check the power supply before
using equipment.
